chance presents picasso's stripes

I'm a sucker for striped tees, and Chance Co. is my go-to source. I have the classic red + white and navy + white editions of their cult-favorite boatneck, but I'm clamoring for their newest bold striped shirt. It was inspired by Picasso, for heaven's sake. I'd pair it with a vintage Levi's jean jacket (or vintage army green cargo jacket) and a big silk scarf. So chic! Can you tell I'm ready for fall? :)

joyce lee + buddy editions

I can't say enough wonderful things about my friend Katie's art business, Buddy Editions. A beautiful, curated art site was a longtime dream of hers that she worked and worked and worked to make it a reality -- I so admire that. Amid the myriad of wonderful artists featured on the site (there are tons), the work of photographer Joyce Lee is one of my favorites. It brings to mind the iconic Kate Spade advertisements of the early 2000s: comfortable yet unbelievably stylish scenes from daily life. If you enjoy these photos as much as I do, you won't want to miss Ms. Lee's instagram account. And if you're smart, you'll follow Buddy Editions here, here and here so you won't miss out on new art additions. I'm telling you, they're fabulous.

the unswept floor

I could not believe my eyes when my professor showed my art history class this Roman mosaic circa the 2nd century B.C.E. Located in Pompeii, the decorative piece remains only because it was preserved by the same volcanic ash that destroyed the city.

The mosaic was inspired by the aftermath of a wild upper class dinner party, where it was de riguer to throw remnants of food onto the floor. I’ve always been fascinated by trompe l'oeil – one of my all-time favorite pieces of furniture is Jacqueline Kennedy’s wardrobe in her White House dressing room (see here, too). Apparently, the Romans loved trompe l’oeil as well. It’s strange to think that those of ancient civilizations were just like us.

When I buy my dream home, I’m going to commission an artist to paint this on my kitchen floor. I’ll keep you posted.

a lovely being + etsy

Sometimes, I go a little overboard when I go antiqueing. And by a little, I mean a lot. I'd like to blame it on Kansas City for being such a thrifting goldmine, but the truth is that I've been doing this for years! My little studio apartment is practically bursting at the seams with vintage goods and so I've decided to start an Etsy shop to pass these treasures onto you. Above are a few choice offerings from a lovely being boutique. Each item listed on the site was hand-selected simply because I was drawn to it. I had a lot of fun with styling and setting up the store front, and I can only hope that you take a peek. I'll be adding more pieces (lord knows my apartment needs it) in the next few weeks. If you'd like, drop a line - I'd love to hear what you think!

above: vintage dalmation figurine, yellow and cream striped vintage vase, vintage needlepoint accent pillow, pair of heavy brass vintage pelican bookends, vintage basketweave ceramic pitcher, painted malachite and brass jewelry box
